Have they no shame? The original Harvey is an all-time classic comedy that provided James Stewart with one of his more memorable roles, and it's hard to think how it could be improved. In this bland TV-movie version of Mary Chase's hilarious Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Harry Anderson does his best as cheerful drunk Elwood P Dowd, who insists that he has a giant white rabbit as a chum, and there is useful support from the likes of Swoosie Kurtz and Leslie Nielsen. But it's not a patch on the Stewart film and just makes you pine for the marvellous original. Action Man-type figures fitted with deadly microprocessors go on menacing manoeuvres in this Gremlins-meets-Toy Story war fantasy from director Joe Dante, which takes a long time setting up its simple premise but is worth the wait. The movie's slick professionalism and technical brilliance keep the awkward mixture of mirth and mayhem from becoming too uncomfortable an experience. Crafty nods to classic war films such as Patton, the creepy Gwendy doll sequence and the GI Joes being voiced by the likes of Tommy Lee Jones, Ernest Borgnine and Bruce Dern also help maintain the interest for adults as well as youngsters. A good idea - a broken-down boat is used as a decoy in the Second World War - suffers from a crippling uncertainty of tone - is it meant to be funny, or isn't it? - in this misfiring comedy. As a screenwriter, Richard Murphy worked on some really interesting films for 20th Century-Fox, including Broken Lance and Compulsion. Here, for Columbia, he proves to be less than the ideal director for his own material, despite the services of an attractive cast headed by the genial Jack Lemmon. Sadly, teen idol Ricky Nelson shows that underplaying is no real substitute for acting ability. This battle-of-the sexes romantic comedy was the first and most entertaining of the series of films Doris Day made for Universal Studios that gave the singing star a career lift and successfully teamed her with the likes of Cary Grant, James Garner and her most popular partner, Rock Hudson. It's ultra-glossy froth, and the smart plot about Day and Hudson sharing a telephone party line won an Oscar for best story and screenplay. Hudson displays a flair for adroit humour, but the funniest material goes to Tony Randall (never better) and the acerbic Thelma Ritter, and both shine through the heavily piled-on glamour (the hallmark of co-producer Ross Hunter). Director Michael Gordon's use of CinemaScope is exemplary. Nearly a decade on, it's hard to recall the furore that greeted this film on its original release. Almost everyone compared first-time director Kenneth Branagh with Laurence Olivier, who made his own debut behind the camera with the same play 45 years earlier. The knives were clearly out for the pretender to Olivier's throne, yet he managed to produce a version that was as much of its time as Olivier's had been. Instead of the booming patriotism of the wartime flag-waver that was served up by Olivier, Branagh decided to focus on the savagery and futility of war. He thoroughly merited his best actor Oscar nomination: although the critics stood firmly behind Olivier's grandiloquence, Branagh gave the more subtle and rounded performance. His inclusion in the direction category, however, was more than a little flattering, as his showy use of camera and slow motion too often betrayed the naivety of the debutant. But that quibble aside, this is a solidly mounted production, with the contrasts between the finery of the court and the grime of the battlefield as striking as the excellent cast of noted thespians. This is an excellent adaptation of James Herbert's fantasy adventure about a man protecting his family from villainous intent when he's reincarnated as a dog after a fatal car crash. Directed by co-writer Carlo Carlei in a breathtaking style complete with razzle-dazzle visuals, what basically sounds like a children's story becomes one accessible to adults thanks to a host of serious issues raised in a galvanising human context. Good voiceover work from Matthew Modine (as Fluke the mixed-breed puppy) and Samuel L Jackson (playing the wise, older dog, Rumbo) dovetails neatly with fine performances from human stars Nancy Travis and Eric Stoltz in a charming and touching tale sprinkled with special magic. This mixture of the rough (Lee Marvin) and the smooth (Roger Moore) wasn't such a good idea, even if the oddball partnership was supposed to be for king and country in the First World War. Based on the Wilbur Smith novel, the tale follows the undynamic duo as they set out to sabotage a German cruiser berthed in an East African delta. There's more action - rampaging natives, rape, malaria, ticking time bombs - than you'd expect, but, as neither hero is very likeable, you really don't care. Moore did better in a similar role when he teamed with Tony Curtis for The Persuaders TV series. Now, thanks to the wizards of the special-effects industry, this digitally manipulated villain can meet his adversaries in a world of vibrant action and epic adventure. It's all here: ancient curses, an embalmed high priest, two rival parties searching for archaeological treasure and dashing legionnaire Brendan Fraser romancing prim librarian Rachel Weisz. Screenwriter/director Stephen Sommers has embroidered the original story to excess at times, with flesh-eating beetles and battling zombie slaves just two of the gruesome modern additions vying for screen time with the more traditional elements of the tale. Yet Fraser does his goofy macho best as an Indiana Jones clone, tackling every scene with endearing enthusiasm, while Arnold Vosloo has the perfect bone structure for the brooding menace returned from the dead. Taking the baton from the far superior Babe, this children-oriented comedy adventure mixes live action, animatronics and computer-generated animation to create a covert struggle for world domination between cats and dogs. It's a nice concept - that our pets are engaged in espionage and subterfuge (and that they talk behind our backs) - but messy execution and a weak script serve to undermine any potential charm. The problem lies in the uneasy switch from real animal actors - the cute central beagle Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire), various innocent looking cats - to all-too-obvious puppets. For instance, feline villain Mr Tinkles (Sean Hayes) is almost all animatronic and thus jars horribly with sidekick Calico (Jon Lovitz), a flesh-and-blood moggy with animated facial features. In the end, there's too much going on technically and not enough going on narratively. This workmanlike thriller is based on the true story of a Soviet nuclear submarine that sprung a radioactive leak and almost started the Third World War in 1961. Harrison Ford plays the captain at loggerheads with his second-in-command, Liam Neeson; Ford is willing to sacrifice anything or anyone for the good of the Soviet Union, while Neeson has only the welfare of the crew at heart. After about an hour of these two locking horns, interspersed with shots of doomed sailors looking at photos of their loved ones, the nuclear reactor leaks and the film gets interesting. The horror of the radiation effects, the race against time, the claustrophobic tension - all of this works, but it's too little too late. By then we barely care what happens. Expect lots of lingering shots of a very buff Moore flexing muscles, shaving her head and kicking male butt in between impressively co-ordinated training scenes. This Civil War tale is a long overdue tribute to the 54th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry, America's first black regiment to go into combat. The details are culled partly from the letters of the 54th's commander, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick), a sensitive 25-year-old (but already a veteran) from an abolitionist family who's determined to lead his men into full battle. Shaw faces resistance from both above and below: his racist superiors won't even allow the soldiers boots, and the troops resent the white man's leadership, especially rebellious runaway slave Denzel Washington. While there are undoubtedly pockets of stereotyping, such as the embarrassing scene in which Morgan Freeman, Washington and the rest of the black cast burst into spiritual harmonies, the lasting impression is of Washington's performance in particular and the plight of the men in general. Fabulously photographed by Freddie Francis and with brilliantly staged (and shockingly violent) battle scenes, Glory will bring tears to the steeliest eye. Natasha Henstridge plays the dangerous spawn of combined alien and human DNA in this sexy sci-fi shocker from director Roger Donaldson. Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen and Alfred Molina are among the inept government scientists speaking daft dialogue as they attempt to track down the genetic engineering experiment gone awry before she devours half the male population of LA. Nifty designs by surrealist HR Giger (who gave the extraterrestrial in Alien its incredible look) and some engaging tongue-in-cheek thrills go part way to disguising the fact that this is essentially clich�d B-movie stuff, albeit delivered with a pleasingly glossy sheen. Looking for all the world like father and son, cinema's two golden "boys" Robert Redford and Brad Pitt team up for this daftly implausible but diverting spy yarn from Enemy of the State director Tony Scott. Redford's the old pro who's about to retire from the CIA; Pitt's the boy-wonder prot�g� banged up in a Chinese hellhole after failing to free old flame Catherine McCormack from custody. The 24 hours prior to Pitt's execution see Redford reminiscing about the partnership, before running rings round his oblivious CIA superiors with little more than a glue stick, a marker pen and some sticky-backed plastic in an attempt to save his friend's life. It's like spy-gaming, Blue Peter-style. Two years after he hit the big time with the fabulous Dead Calm, Australian director Phillip Noyce made this nifty martial arts saga. Rutger Hauer plays a blind Vietnam veteran who rescues his buddy's son from evil gangsters and then hits the road, bonding with the boy while fending off the bad guys at every available opportunity. It's a gimmicky, but above-average, action adventure (based on the hugely popular Japanese Zatoichi film series), and Hauer does his best to cover up the lack of substance with some split-second samurai stunts. A smattering of well placed tongue-in-cheek humour helps the time pass in reasonably entertaining fashion. Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this formulaic but highly enjoyable supernatural thriller from director Robert Zemeckis. Scientist Norman Spencer (Ford in distinctly non-heroic mode) and his wife Claire (Pfeiffer) have renovated their idyllic Vermont lakeside house, but their domestic bliss is disturbed when Claire starts seeing and hearing ghostly apparitions. After suspecting their strange neighbour of foul play - a subplot that echoes Rear Window - it soon becomes obvious that an event in the past has returned to haunt them. A creaking cocktail of light suspense and implausible plotting that pushes every tried-and-tested scare button, this mass-market shocker is illuminated by Pfeiffer's wholly believable performance as the traumatised wife. While Zemeckis is no Hitchcock, this is an efficient retread of territory already claimed by Stir of Echoes, The Sixth Sense and even Fatal Attraction. You get two Jean-Claude Van Dammes for the price of one in this gleaming comic-strip action adventure from director Peter Hyams. The Muscles from Brussels encounters his younger self - and sports a silly hairdo - when he's sent back in time to catch a sinister senator (Ron Silver) who's trying to change the past for his own monetary ends. If you can follow the time-travel logic, which everyone seems to be making up as they go along, then this will make for dumb fun, with good old Jean-Claude causing as much futuristic Van Dammage as possible. You'll be yawning as much as the caverns at this horror from first-time director Bruce Hunt. Unlike Neil Marshall's excellent subterranean shocker The Descent, this formulaic monster B-movie is stripped of true visceral verve by a dumbed-down script and the restrictions of its 12 certificate. When a group of cave divers explore an uncharted area in the Carpathian mountains, they are trapped by an underwater cave-in and soon become the prey of a pack of bloodthirsty creatures. With a bit of The Abyss here, a little Jaws there and the beasties a cross between something out of Pitch Black and Alien, there's little originality in Hunt's visual arsenal, although the underwater photography is decent enough.
