 | Meteor(1979) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Director Ronald Neame here places the planet on a hopeless, star-studded collision course with a gigantic asteroid. Spectacle has never looked cheaper or more pathetic than the tidal waves, avalanches and mud slides on view in this celluloid catastrophe that reaches an apex of absurdity when America (in the person of Sean Connery) and Russia (Natalie Wood) bury the hatchet to nuke the big rock. The film effectively wrapped up the spate of 1970s blockbuster disaster movies, which began well with The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno before running out of steam with the likes of The Swarm. Airplane! was just around the corner ...(Starring:Dr Paul Bradley*Sean Connery|Tatiana Donskaya*Natalie Wood|Harry Sherwood*Karl Malden|Dr Dubov*Brian Keith|General Adlon*Martin Landau|Sir Michael Hughes*Trevor Howard|Secretary of Defense*Richard Dysart|President*Henry Fonda|Hunter*Roger Robinson) finderface Links: Henry Fonda Sean Connery

 | Harvey(1996) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Have they no shame? The original Harvey is an all-time classic comedy that provided James Stewart with one of his more memorable roles, and it's hard to think how it could be improved. In this bland TV-movie version of Mary Chase's hilarious Pulitzer Prize-winning play, Harry Anderson does his best as cheerful drunk Elwood P Dowd, who insists that he has a giant white rabbit as a chum, and there is useful support from the likes of Swoosie Kurtz and Leslie Nielsen. But it's not a patch on the Stewart film and just makes you pine for the marvellous original. | Small Soldiers(1998) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Action Man-type figures fitted with deadly microprocessors go on menacing manoeuvres in this Gremlins-meets-Toy Story war fantasy from director Joe Dante, which takes a long time setting up its simple premise but is worth the wait. The movie's slick professionalism and technical brilliance keep the awkward mixture of mirth and mayhem from becoming too uncomfortable an experience. Crafty nods to classic war films such as Patton, the creepy Gwendy doll sequence and the GI Joes being voiced by the likes of Tommy Lee Jones, Ernest Borgnine and Bruce Dern also help maintain the interest for adults as well as youngsters. Yet this mix of technology-run-amok and children's nightmare sometimes takes belief a bridge too far. | Columbo: A Bird in the Hand(1991) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Another baffling case for the crumpled cigar-chewing sleuth. When a brutish, bullying sports magnate is killed in a hit-and-run accident, suspicions are aroused when his wife immediately takes up with her dead husband's nephew.(Starring:Peter Falk,Tyne Daly,Steve Forrest,Greg Evigan,Frank McRae,Don S Davis) Saturday November 22 12:50 - 14:45 |
 | Home Alone 3(1997) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top In the absence of Macaulay Culkin, cute little Alex D Linz plays the resourceful youngster who's on his own in the house, where he fends off an international espionage team trying to steal back a top-secret computer chip hidden in his new toy. Pity the hapless baddies as the plucky boy devises ingenious booby traps and performs engaging heroics to foil them. Writer John Hughes's third neatly plotted variation on the same theme is good knockabout fun, with Linz a winning replacement for Culkin. There are some genuine laughs, and not too much saccharin or cartoon-style brutality. (Starring:Alex Pruitt*Alex D Linz|Beaupre*Olek Krupa|Alice*Rya Kihlstedt|Jernigan*Lenny Von Dohlen|Unger*David Thornton|Karen Pruitt*Haviland Morris|Jack Pruitt*Kevin Kilner|Mrs Hess*Marian Seldes|Molly*Scarlett Johansson) Saturday November 22 13:00 - 14:55 |

 | The Lost World(1960) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Long before Steven Spielberg and Michael Crichton got there, the "master of disaster" Irwin Allen had already transported audiences to a lost world, author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's South American plateau forgotten by time. In one of his later roles, Claude Rains leads the cast of lesser stars on an Amazonian expedition where they confront a host of magnified pet-shop lizards with plastic fins in this glossy, if conventionally plotted, fantasy adventure containing intermittent thrills. Clips from this would be a mainstay of Allen's out-of-this-world TV series for years to come. | The Wackiest Ship in the Army(1961) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top A good idea - a broken-down boat is used as a decoy in the Second World War - suffers from a crippling uncertainty of tone - is it meant to be funny, or isn't it? - in this misfiring comedy. As a screenwriter, Richard Murphy worked on some really interesting films for 20th Century-Fox, including Broken Lance and Compulsion. Here, for Columbia, he proves to be less than the ideal director for his own material, despite the services of an attractive cast headed by the genial Jack Lemmon. Sadly, teen idol Ricky Nelson shows that underplaying is no real substitute for acting ability. The use of CinemaScope is exemplary - boats and seascapes are made for horizontal compositions - and the supporting cast is full of welcome faces, but, overall, even though it later spawned a TV series, the film simply doesn't work.(Starring:Lt Rip Crandall*Jack Lemmon|Ensign Tommy Hanson*Ricky Nelson|Commander Vandewater*John Lund|Patterson*Chips Rafferty|Capt McClung*Tom Tully|Josh Davidson*Joby Baker|Sparks*Warren Berlinger|Maggie*Patricia Driscoll|Chief Mate MacCarthy*Mike Kellin|Lieutenant Foster*Richard Anderson|Johnson*Alvy Moore) finderface Links: Jack Lemmon

 | Pillow Talk(1959) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This battle-of-the sexes romantic comedy was the first and most entertaining of the series of films Doris Day made for Universal Studios that gave the singing star a career lift and successfully teamed her with the likes of Cary Grant, James Garner and her most popular partner, Rock Hudson. It's ultra-glossy froth, and the smart plot about Day and Hudson sharing a telephone party line won an Oscar for best story and screenplay. Hudson displays a flair for adroit humour, but the funniest material goes to Tony Randall (never better) and the acerbic Thelma Ritter, and both shine through the heavily piled-on glamour (the hallmark of co-producer Ross Hunter). Director Michael Gordon's use of CinemaScope is exemplary. | Henry V(1989) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Nearly a decade on, it's hard to recall the furore that greeted this film on its original release. Almost everyone compared first-time director Kenneth Branagh with Laurence Olivier, who made his own debut behind the camera with the same play 45 years earlier. The knives were clearly out for the pretender to Olivier's throne, yet he managed to produce a version that was as much of its time as Olivier's had been. Instead of the booming patriotism of the wartime flag-waver that was served up by Olivier, Branagh decided to focus on the savagery and futility of war. He thoroughly merited his best actor Oscar nomination: although the critics stood firmly behind Olivier's grandiloquence, Branagh gave the more subtle and rounded performance. His inclusion in the direction category, however, was more than a little flattering, as his showy use of camera and slow motion too often betrayed the naivety of the debutant. But that quibble aside, this is a solidly mounted production, with the contrasts between the finery of the court and the grime of the battlefield as striking as the excellent cast of noted thespians. | Columbo: It's All in the Game(1993) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Crime drama in which the dishevelled detective is assigned to look into the murder of a Latin American playboy gambler. | A Man Betrayed(1941) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top John Wayne became Republic's biggest asset thanks to Stagecoach and other good films he made elsewhere. But his home studio repeatedly let him down with feeble pictures such as this, originally shown in Britain as Citadel of Crime, which tries to combine an exposé of crooked politics with doses of screwball comedy and fails on both counts. On the plus side, Wayne is appealing as a crusading lawyer, Edward Ellis is forceful as a corrupt but likeable politician, while Frances Dee is unusually vivacious as the latter's daughter. The oddest element is Ward Bond's mobster, excruciatingly played as an imitation of the simple-minded Lenny from Of Mice and Men.(Starring:Lynn Hollister*John Wayne|Sabra Cameron*Frances Dee|Tom Cameron*Edward Ellis|Casey*Wallace Ford|Floyd*Ward Bond|Morris Slade*Harold Huber|T Amato*Alexander Granach|George*Barnett Parker) Saturday November 22 14:55 - 16:35 |
 | Fluke(1995) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This is an excellent adaptation of James Herbert's fantasy adventure about a man protecting his family from villainous intent when he's reincarnated as a dog after a fatal car crash. Directed by co-writer Carlo Carlei in a breathtaking style complete with razzle-dazzle visuals, what basically sounds like a children's story becomes one accessible to adults thanks to a host of serious issues raised in a galvanising human context. Good voiceover work from Matthew Modine (as Fluke the mixed-breed puppy) and Samuel L Jackson (playing the wise, older dog, Rumbo) dovetails neatly with fine performances from human stars Nancy Travis and Eric Stoltz in a charming and touching tale sprinkled with special magic. (Starring:Thomas Johnson / Fluke*Matthew Modine|Carol Johnson*Nancy Travis|Jeff Newman*Eric Stoltz|Brian Johnson*Max Pomeranc|Rumbo*Samuel L Jackson|Sylvester*Ron Perlman|Boss*Jon Polito|Bert*Bill Cobbs|Bella*Collin Wilcox Paxton|Professor Santini*Federico Pacifici) finderface Links: Eric Stoltz

 | Dakota Incident(1956) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This dire western - a pale imitation of Stagecoach - has an adequate cast headed by Dale Robertson and Linda Darnell that is hamstrung by pretentious dialogue and fuzzy characterisations. After interminable scenes in town, setting up the boring characters, hopes rise when they set off on the stage, but this only leads to more excessive gabbing when the travellers take cover in a dry waterhole after being attacked by Cheyenne Indians. It's a particular relief when Ward Bond's foolish windbag of a senator discovers that his sympathy for the tribesmen is not reciprocated.(Starring:John Banner*Dale Robertson|Amy Clarke*Linda Darnell|Carter Hamilton*John Lund|Senator Blakely*Ward Bond|Minstrel*Regis Toomey|Frank Banner*Skip Homeier) Saturday November 22 16:35 - 18:25 |
 | Shout at the Devil(1976) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This mixture of the rough (Lee Marvin) and the smooth (Roger Moore) wasn't such a good idea, even if the oddball partnership was supposed to be for king and country in the First World War. Based on the Wilbur Smith novel, the tale follows the undynamic duo as they set out to sabotage a German cruiser berthed in an East African delta. There's more action - rampaging natives, rape, malaria, ticking time bombs - than you'd expect, but, as neither hero is very likeable, you really don't care. Moore did better in a similar role when he teamed with Tony Curtis for The Persuaders TV series. (Starring:Flynn*Lee Marvin|Sebastian Oldsmith*Roger Moore|Rosa*Barbara Parkins|Mohammed*Ian Holm|Commissioner Fleischer*Rene Kolldehoff [Reinhard Kolldehoff]|Braun*Gernot Endemann|Von Kleine*Karl Michael Vogler|Kyller*Horst Janson|Mr Smythe*Maurice Denham|Mrs Smythe*Jean Kent|El Keb*George Coulouris|Cynthia*Heather Wright|Captain Joyce*Bernard Horsfall) finderface Links: Ian Holm Roger Moore

 | The Mummy(1999) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top In the good old days, the Mummy merely met Abbott and Costello. Now, thanks to the wizards of the special-effects industry, this digitally manipulated villain can meet his adversaries in a world of vibrant action and epic adventure. It's all here: ancient curses, an embalmed high priest, two rival parties searching for archaeological treasure and dashing legionnaire Brendan Fraser romancing prim librarian Rachel Weisz. Screenwriter/director Stephen Sommers has embroidered the original story to excess at times, with flesh-eating beetles and battling zombie slaves just two of the gruesome modern additions vying for screen time with the more traditional elements of the tale. Yet Fraser does his goofy macho best as an Indiana Jones clone, tackling every scene with endearing enthusiasm, while Arnold Vosloo has the perfect bone structure for the brooding menace returned from the dead. | Cats & Dogs(2001) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Taking the baton from the far superior Babe, this children-oriented comedy adventure mixes live action, animatronics and computer-generated animation to create a covert struggle for world domination between cats and dogs. It's a nice concept - that our pets are engaged in espionage and subterfuge (and that they talk behind our backs) - but messy execution and a weak script serve to undermine any potential charm. The problem lies in the uneasy switch from real animal actors - the cute central beagle Lou (voiced by Tobey Maguire), various innocent looking cats - to all-too-obvious puppets. For instance, feline villain Mr Tinkles (Sean Hayes) is almost all animatronic and thus jars horribly with sidekick Calico (Jon Lovitz), a flesh-and-blood moggy with animated facial features. In the end, there's too much going on technically and not enough going on narratively. And if you're a "cat person" you should stay away from what is blatant pro-dog propaganda, in any case.(Starring:Professor Brody*Jeff Goldblum|Mrs Brody*Elizabeth Perkins|Sophie*Miriam Margolyes|Scott Brody*Alexander Pollack [Alexander Pollock]|Lou*Tobey Maguire|Butch*Alec Baldwin|Mr Tinkles*Sean Hayes|Ivy*Susan Sarandon|Peek*Joe Pantoliano|Sam*Michael Clarke Duncan|Calico*Jon Lovitz|The Mastiff*Charlton Heston|Ninja*Danny Mann|Ninja*Billy West) finderface Links: Alec Baldwin Jeff Goldblum Susan Sarandon Tobey Maguire

 | K-19: the Widowmaker(2002) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This workmanlike thriller is based on the true story of a Soviet nuclear submarine that sprung a radioactive leak and almost started the Third World War in 1961. Harrison Ford plays the captain at loggerheads with his second-in-command, Liam Neeson; Ford is willing to sacrifice anything or anyone for the good of the Soviet Union, while Neeson has only the welfare of the crew at heart. After about an hour of these two locking horns, interspersed with shots of doomed sailors looking at photos of their loved ones, the nuclear reactor leaks and the film gets interesting. The horror of the radiation effects, the race against time, the claustrophobic tension - all of this works, but it's too little too late. By then we barely care what happens. And it boasts the least authentic accents since Dick Van Dyke in Mary Poppins - Neeson tries his best until he hears Ford's paltry effort and then decides not to bother after all.(Starring:Alexei Vostrikov*Harrison Ford|Mikhail Polenin*Liam Neeson|Vadim Radtchenko*Peter Sarsgaard|Marshal Zelentstov*Joss Ackland|Admiral Bratyeev*John Shrapnel|Dr Savran*Donald Sumpter|Partonov*Tim Woodward|Demichev*Steve Nicolson|Suslov*Ravil Isyanov [Ravil Issyanov]|Pavel*Christian Camargo) finderface Links: Harrison Ford Joss Ackland Liam Neeson

 | GI Jane(1997) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Demi Moore built up her body but forgot to spend equal time on her acting skills for this high-on-testosterone, low-on-brains action film from director Ridley Scott. Moore plays Lieutenant Jordan O'Neil, who becomes the first woman to train with the macho Navy SEALS as part of a government experiment. Expect lots of lingering shots of a very buff Moore flexing muscles, shaving her head and kicking male butt in between impressively co-ordinated training scenes. But don't expect much in the way of great moments in acting, apart from a suitably gruff performance from Viggo Mortensen as Moore's poetry-reciting superior.(Starring:Lt Jordan O'Neil*Demi Moore|Master Chief John Urgayle*Viggo Mortensen|Lillian DeHaven*Anne Bancroft|Royce*Jason Beghe|CO Salem*Scott Wilson|Blondell*Lucinda Jenney|McCool*Morris Chestnut|Slovnik*Jim Caviezel|Theodore Hayes*Daniel Von Bargen|Chief of Staff*John Michael Higgins|Instructor Pyro*Kevin Gage|Instructor Johns*David Warshofsky|Cortez*David Vadim) finderface Links: Demi Moore

 | Glory(1989) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top This Civil War tale is a long overdue tribute to the 54th Massachusetts Voluntary Infantry, America's first black regiment to go into combat. The details are culled partly from the letters of the 54th's commander, Colonel Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick), a sensitive 25-year-old (but already a veteran) from an abolitionist family who's determined to lead his men into full battle. Shaw faces resistance from both above and below: his racist superiors won't even allow the soldiers boots, and the troops resent the white man's leadership, especially rebellious runaway slave Denzel Washington. While there are undoubtedly pockets of stereotyping, such as the embarrassing scene in which Morgan Freeman, Washington and the rest of the black cast burst into spiritual harmonies, the lasting impression is of Washington's performance in particular and the plight of the men in general. Fabulously photographed by Freddie Francis and with brilliantly staged (and shockingly violent) battle scenes, Glory will bring tears to the steeliest eye. | Species(1995) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Natasha Henstridge plays the dangerous spawn of combined alien and human DNA in this sexy sci-fi shocker from director Roger Donaldson. Ben Kingsley, Michael Madsen and Alfred Molina are among the inept government scientists speaking daft dialogue as they attempt to track down the genetic engineering experiment gone awry before she devours half the male population of LA. Nifty designs by surrealist HR Giger (who gave the extraterrestrial in Alien its incredible look) and some engaging tongue-in-cheek thrills go part way to disguising the fact that this is essentially clichéd B-movie stuff, albeit delivered with a pleasingly glossy sheen. | Spy Game(2001) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Looking for all the world like father and son, cinema's two golden "boys" Robert Redford and Brad Pitt team up for this daftly implausible but diverting spy yarn from Enemy of the State director Tony Scott. Redford's the old pro who's about to retire from the CIA; Pitt's the boy-wonder protégé banged up in a Chinese hellhole after failing to free old flame Catherine McCormack from custody. The 24 hours prior to Pitt's execution see Redford reminiscing about the partnership, before running rings round his oblivious CIA superiors with little more than a glue stick, a marker pen and some sticky-backed plastic in an attempt to save his friend's life. It's like spy-gaming, Blue Peter-style. Flashy, if a little over-elaborate, in its direction, Spy Game doesn't quite deliver on the promise of its superstar pairing, but Redford, as always, is a delight to watch.(Starring:Nathan Muir*Robert Redford|Tom Bishop*Brad Pitt|Elizabeth Hadley*Catherine McCormack|Charles Harker*Stephen Dillane|Troy Folger*Larry Bryggman|Gladys Jennip*Marianne Jean-Baptiste|Harry Duncan*David Hemmings|Mitch Alford*James Aubrey|Dr Byars*Matthew Marsh|Robert Aiken*Todd Boyce|Anne Cathcart*Charlotte Rampling|Commander Wiley*Dale Dye) finderface Links: Brad Pitt Charlotte Rampling Robert Redford

 | Blind Fury(1990) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Two years after he hit the big time with the fabulous Dead Calm, Australian director Phillip Noyce made this nifty martial arts saga. Rutger Hauer plays a blind Vietnam veteran who rescues his buddy's son from evil gangsters and then hits the road, bonding with the boy while fending off the bad guys at every available opportunity. It's a gimmicky, but above-average, action adventure (based on the hugely popular Japanese Zatoichi film series), and Hauer does his best to cover up the lack of substance with some split-second samurai stunts. A smattering of well placed tongue-in-cheek humour helps the time pass in reasonably entertaining fashion. | What Lies Beneath(2000) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer star in this formulaic but highly enjoyable supernatural thriller from director Robert Zemeckis. Scientist Norman Spencer (Ford in distinctly non-heroic mode) and his wife Claire (Pfeiffer) have renovated their idyllic Vermont lakeside house, but their domestic bliss is disturbed when Claire starts seeing and hearing ghostly apparitions. After suspecting their strange neighbour of foul play - a subplot that echoes Rear Window - it soon becomes obvious that an event in the past has returned to haunt them. A creaking cocktail of light suspense and implausible plotting that pushes every tried-and-tested scare button, this mass-market shocker is illuminated by Pfeiffer's wholly believable performance as the traumatised wife. While Zemeckis is no Hitchcock, this is an efficient retread of territory already claimed by Stir of Echoes, The Sixth Sense and even Fatal Attraction. You know what to expect!(Starring:Norman Spencer*Harrison Ford|Claire Spencer*Michelle Pfeiffer|Jody*Diana Scarwid|Dr Drayton*Joe Morton|Warren Feur*James Remar|Mary Feur*Miranda Otto|Madison Elizabeth Frank*Amber Valletta) finderface Links: Harrison Ford Michelle Pfeiffer

 | Timecop(1994) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top You get two Jean-Claude Van Dammes for the price of one in this gleaming comic-strip action adventure from director Peter Hyams. The Muscles from Brussels encounters his younger self - and sports a silly hairdo - when he's sent back in time to catch a sinister senator (Ron Silver) who's trying to change the past for his own monetary ends. If you can follow the time-travel logic, which everyone seems to be making up as they go along, then this will make for dumb fun, with good old Jean-Claude causing as much futuristic Van Dammage as possible. However, most sci-fi fans will find it desperately outdated. Best exchange - Jean-Claude: "He read my mind." Jean-Claude's wife: "With your English, I'm not surprised." | The Cave(2005) Lookup on IMDB Back to Top You'll be yawning as much as the caverns at this horror from first-time director Bruce Hunt. Unlike Neil Marshall's excellent subterranean shocker The Descent, this formulaic monster B-movie is stripped of true visceral verve by a dumbed-down script and the restrictions of its 12 certificate. When a group of cave divers explore an uncharted area in the Carpathian mountains, they are trapped by an underwater cave-in and soon become the prey of a pack of bloodthirsty creatures. With a bit of The Abyss here, a little Jaws there and the beasties a cross between something out of Pitch Black and Alien, there's little originality in Hunt's visual arsenal, although the underwater photography is decent enough. The trouble is that the ghouls are kept hidden by a flurry of blurry edits to hide their CGI banality, while the C-list cast can barely keep up with the limited excitement generated by this chill-free black hole.(Starring:Top Buchanan*Morris Chestnut|Kathryn*Lena Headey|Jack*Cole Hauser|Charlie*Piper Perabo|Tyler*Eddie Cibrian|Philip Briggs*Rick Ravanello|Dr Nicolai*Marcel Iures|Vince Strode*Kieran Darcy-Smith|Alex Kim*Daniel Dae Kim) Saturday November 22 23:20 - 01:20 |
